A Stitch of Kindness
May 12, 2026
The WDMH
Foundation is feeling extra warm and fuzzy thanks to a remarkable community
effort put together by local supporter Jennifer Gibson.
Last week
Jennifer donated 60 hand‑knitted hats to the WDMH Chemotherapy Unit. Each hat
was thoughtfully made to bring warmth, dignity, and comfort to patients during
treatment.
Jennifer’s
journey began in February when she took on the Canadian Cancer Society’s
Knitting Challenge, inspired by her family’s own experiences with cancer care
at WDMH. With skills passed down from her grandmother, a former WDMH employee,
Jennifer quickly realized she couldn’t do it alone and that’s when the
community stepped in.
With support
from the owner of Wabi Sabi yarn store in Hintonburg, Jennifer hosted two free
chemo‑hat workshops with donated yarn and refreshments. The sessions filled
quickly, bringing together knitters and neighbours united by kindness. By the
end of March, more than 50 hats had been created through this shared effort.
“These hats
represent so much more than warmth,” says the WDMH Foundation. “They reflect
compassion, connection, and a community that shows up for patients when it
matters most.”
The WDMH
Foundation extends their sincere thanks to Jennifer, the volunteers, and the
local businesses that helped turn yarn into comfort one stitch at a time.
